How to measure your gauge

Knit a swatch at least 15 cm (6 in) square in the pattern stitch, block it the way you will block the finished piece, then count the stitches and rows across a flat 10 cm (4 in) section in the middle. Edge stitches distort the count, so never measure right to the edge.

Why gauge matters more than needle size

Two knitters using the same needles and yarn can be a full stitch per inch apart. A difference of only 1 stitch per 10 cm over a 100 cm sweater circumference is roughly 5 cm of extra ease — a whole size.
